Every six months, we want to see you for a checkup and cleaning visit, but we also need to see your little ones too! Children of all ages, from toddlers to teens, benefit from having their smiles examined and cleaned twice a year. In today’s blog, your Bedford, MA, dentist explains what happens during your child’s six-month visit!
The Dental Checkup Portion
First, we will sit your child down and carefully examine his or her smile with advanced technology, including digital x-rays and intraoral cameras. These detailed images allow us to look at the teeth, gums, and oral structures for possible signs of trouble, including tooth decay, gingivitis, and developing misalignment. We then create a personalized treatment plan to address any issues we discover. The visit also helps your child better understand his or her smile, and these routine visits also lower the risk of dental anxiety.
Removing Plaque and Tartar
We also clean the teeth. Brushing and flossing alone cannot remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the smile. With a professional cleaning, we will remove all plaque and tartar with a manual tool and an ultrasonic scaler. We then polish the teeth for a smoother finish. The procedure only takes a few minutes, but lowers the risk of cavities, dental infection, gingivitis, bad breath, and teeth stains. To help control plaque in between six-month visits, be sure your child brushes and flosses daily. You may need to help your toddler aged children, and keep an eye on your older kids to make sure they’re not skimping on their daily oral hygiene routine!
Applying Fluoride and Dental Sealants
If we find your little one has high risk factors for developing tooth decay, then we may recommend preventive treatments to help safeguard the smile. For example, during each checkup visit we will apply a fluoride varnish to the surfaces of the teeth. The process takes a few minutes, but helps strengthen the smile’s natural defenses against cavities. Since kids also have trouble reaching the rear teeth when they brush and floss, this can allow food to remain trapped between them, increasing the risk of cavities. Fortunately, with dental sealants we apply an acrylic coating to these teeth, which helps prevent food from becoming stuck between the teeth. Children then have a lower risk of tooth decay, as the sealants will stray in place anywhere between 5 and 10 years on average.
