Start School With Bright And Healthy Smiles

bedford back to school

The school year is going to start in a few weeks, and this impacts kids and their teachers. Which is why we want to make sure everyone, whether they’re students or teachers, start a new year with a bright and healthy smile. In today’s blog, your Bedford, MA, dentist talks about our back-to-school checkup and cleaning visits.

Our Back-To-School Appointments

Whether you’re a teacher or have a child soon to start school, these next few months will mean a full calendar, between classes, studying, holidays, and extracurricular activities. Finding time to see the dentist without missing classes or practices can be difficult. But by taking care of your child’s (or your own) checkup and cleaning now, you can help start the new school year with brighter and healthier smiles. We can offer treatment for issues like cavities, preventing worsening pain and complications too. We also have preventive treatments too!

Checkups and Cleanings

The checkup visit means our team will sit you down and carefully examine your teeth, gums, and oral structures with digital x-rays and intraoral camera images. The pictures we take will allow us to make a diagnosis with precision and accuracy, identifying problems like cavities, infection, gingivitis, and gum disease in the early stages, so we can treat them quickly. We also watch for TMD and bruxism (teeth grinding, screening for oral cancer for older patients, and make sure the risk of misalignment is minimal. With the cleaning procedure, we remove the plaque and tartar buildup completely, which brushing and flossing alone cannot accomplish. This means a lower risk of cavities and periodontal disease, and also a decreased risk of bad breath and teeth stains.

Fluoride and Dental Sealants

What about the preventive treatments we discussed above? For kids, we can apply a fluoride gel to the teeth during each checkup visit. This helps strengthen the protective layer of outer enamel to lower the risk of cavities. Dental sealants can be helpful too. These are a thin plastic coating we add to the rear teeth, which helps prevent food particles from becoming stuck on or between them, lowering the risk of tooth decay and dental infection. They can then stay in place for up to ten years in some cases!
