Our last blog was about the checkup, and why you need to see us every six months for one. But in the same visit, we also clean your teeth, removing plaque and tartar in one visit. In today’s blog, your Bedford, MA, dentist explains how we protect smiles of all ages by removing buildup as part of your dental cleaning visit.
The Causes of Your Buildup
When we eat and drink, particularly foods and beverages high in sugar, this leaves behind particles that harmful oral bacteria will consume. This is especially true if we don’t brush and floss properly, since these particles remain trapped on and between the teeth. As bacteria breaks down these particles, oral acidity increases and the teeth become coated in plaque. The buildup eventually hardens into tartar and is impossible to remove with brushing and flossing alone. The buildup then demineralizes and erodes outer enamel, and inflames gum tissues, increasing the risk of bad breath, teeth stains, tooth decay, and even gum disease!
Removal with Dental Cleaning
To improve the health of your smile and avoid the onset of serious oral health issues, you need to have these layers of plaque and tartar completely removed from your teeth. With a visit every six months, our team will use an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to break up and remove the buildup. We then polish the teeth thoroughly, offering a brighter appearance and a smoother finish. The process only takes a few minutes, and is beneficial for kids and adults! At home, you should enjoy a healthier diet and make sure you brush twice a day for two minutes using a fluoride toothpaste, and also floss thoroughly in between each tooth every evening. These actions limit how much can accumulate in between each cleaning visit!
What About a Scaling and Root Planing
If the buildup is severe and you haven’t received your six-month cleanings, then you may develop gingivitis or the early stages of gum disease. To reduce inflammation and control periodontal disease, you need treatment. Otherwise, periodontitis could form and cause adult tooth loss. A scaling and root planing enable us to remove buildup from both the teeth and the roots. The process is more involved and could take up to four visits to remove if buildup is severe. We then pish the teeth. The procedure reverses gingivitis, and helps us manage gum disease with regular visits every three to four months for traditional cleanings.
