There are many restorative treatments available to deal with tooth decay and tooth damage. Crowns and fillings are extremely effective, but may require a significant portion of your tooth be removed along with the decay. In dental medicine, it is always our goal for you to keep the maximum amount of your natural teeth; therefore we may recommend the use of inlays and onlays for your restorative needs. Inlays and onlays are sometimes considered a conservative restoration because they cover only a portion of your natural tooth, while leaving intact as much natural structure as possible.
Advantages of a Conservative Approach
- Unlike traditional fillings, inlays and onlays are created in a dental lab to ensure a superior, custom fit. They are designed to impressively match your other teeth, and are not likely to discolor over time.
- By preserving the maximum amount of healthy tooth, inlays and onlays produce an incredibly stable and long-lasting restoration. They are made from durable materials that can help strengthen a damaged or decayed tooth.
- There is no special cleaning regime required. By practicing good oral hygiene, you can ensure they can last a long time.
How it works
Typically the process of having inlays and onlays placed will take two office visits. During the first visit, your dentist must prepare the tooth by removing decay, and creating a molded impression that will be sent to a lab for fabrication of your restoration. Most restorations are made from gold, porcelain, or resin, and each kind produces a different final aesthetic. Your dentist will help you decide which material is best suited for your needs. Usually a temporary inlay or onlay will be placed until your custom piece arrives in the office. Once it arrives, you will return for the second and final visit. Your temporary will be removed and replaced by your new, custom-fit restoration. You should experience normal function of your mouth immediately upon completion of the process.
